Age and residency rules
Who counts as a resident. An Ohio resident is a person who has resided in the state of Ohio for the past six consecutive months. All others are considered nonresidents and must purchase a nonresident license. Nonresident students who are actively enrolled full time in an Ohio college or university qualify for a resident license if they live in Ohio at the time of purchase.
Age-based rules
- Persons less than 16 years of age are not required to purchase a fishing license. This includes taking frogs and turtles.
- Ohio residents born on or before December 31, 1937 may obtain a free fishing license. Still required: This is a free license, not a blanket exemption: the resident must obtain the free license at any license outlet or online through the Ohio Wildlife Licensing System, and carry it while fishing. No formal application is needed for this cohort, unlike the DNR 9032 free licenses.
