Age and residency rules

Who counts as a resident. Under AS 16.05.415(a) a resident is "a person (including an alien) who is physically present in Alaska with the intent to remain indefinitely and make a home here, has maintained that person's domicile in Alaska for the 12 consecutive months immediately preceding this application" and is not claiming residency in another state or country. Military personnel permanently stationed in Alaska for 12 consecutive months, and their dependents who have lived in Alaska for that period, also qualify.

Age-based rules

  • Alaska residents under 18 do not need a sport fishing licence — ADF&G requires one only of "residents age 18 or older".
  • Nonresidents under 16 do not need a sport fishing licence — ADF&G requires one only of "nonresidents age 16 or older".
  • Alaska residents age 60 or older may participate in sport fisheries without a sport fishing license, and do not need a king salmon stamp. Still required: The angler "must apply for and possess an ADF&G Identification Card". The card is issued without charge once an application has been completed and approved, and must be carried while fishing.

Freshwater and saltwater

Alaska licenses freshwater and saltwater fishing. Check which waters your license covers before you fish — a freshwater license does not cover saltwater unless the option explicitly says it does.

State license vs federal registry. NOAA Fisheries lists Alaska among the exempt states: anglers holding a valid Alaska sport fishing licence do not need to register through the National Saltwater Angler Registry.

Exemptions worth knowing

  • Alaska disabled veterans who maintain their residency may participate in sport fisheries without a sport fishing license, and do not need a king salmon stamp. Still required: The veteran must be certified 50% disabled or greater, and "must apply for and possess an ADF&G Identification Card".
